A tip is to 'pad out' the fitting, and my way of achieving this is to add a veneer to the reel rather than to the rod - it is easy to remove it from the reel if not wanted, but if added to the rod it would be rather too permanent

The reels are designed with a full frame to prevent a thin running line or backing line from slipping out of the reel
